Higher Education Headlines
Starmer resigns, sector braces for policy uncertainty
Keir Starmer announced his resignation last week, with Andy Burnham the frontrunner to succeed him. Policy experts say Starmer's legacy in HE was one of missed opportunity; universities welcomed tuition fee unfreezing in the post-16 skills White Paper, but no legislative vehicle followed. Burnham is expected to continue prioritising vocational routes and youth employment over direct university support.
Nottingham puts 2,700 staff at risk — PS roles among those hardest hit
The University of Nottingham's deficit grew from £17m to £85.3m in 2025, triggering letters to nearly 2,700 staff warning of redundancy risk. UCU warns the 608 planned cuts, on top of 350 PS roles already cut last year, could push the institution toward teaching-only status. A two-month strike and marking boycott is now underway.
"Real structural contraction" confirmed at ARMA conference
Speaking at the Association of Research Managers and Administrators conference in Harrogate last week, Teesside University's research director said the sector is experiencing genuine structural change, not a short-term financial blip. Redundancies at research-intensive universities doubled between 2023 and 2025; academic hiring fell almost 19% over the same period.
Russell Group pushes back on "Tarnished Towers" reform report
The Russell Group responded to Policy Exchange's report calling for a root-and-branch fix of English higher education, acknowledging "faultlines in the current system" while defending universities' role in society and the economy. The report has added momentum to government debate about poor-quality courses and graduate outcomes accountability.
