The NSS isn't just about teaching, here's why it matters for professional services too.

The 2026 National Student Survey results landed recently, and while the headline figures make for encouraging reading, the implications for professional services teams across UK universities deserve closer attention.

What is the NSS?

The National Student Survey is an annual UK-wide survey of final year undergraduate students, managed by the Office for Students (OfS). Over 360,000 final year students took part in 2026,  approximately 71.8% of those eligible, making it the largest survey of its kind. Results are published publicly and feed directly into league tables, the Teaching Excellence Framework, and institutional reputation.

What did the 2026 results show?

Overall, 85.8% of students felt positive about their learning experiences in 2026, up from 84.3% in 2025. Almost nine in ten students responded positively to questions about teaching quality, while positivity around the student voice, the extent to which student feedback is considered and acted on, rose to 80.2% from 77.6% in 2025.

Students were also more positive about the ways their institutions communicated mental health support and their students' unions. While the overall picture is positive, the survey found that the positivity score for some institutions on organisation and management was significantly lower than expected, an area that directly implicates professional services delivery.

Why this matters for professional services staff

The NSS isn't just a measure of teaching quality. The questions covering organisation and management, learning resources, academic support, and student voice all reflect the work of professional services teams, student services, registry, IT, marketing, and more.

A strong NSS performance can boost an institution's league table position, attract more applicants, and support the business case for investment in services. A weak one can trigger regulatory scrutiny from the OfS, prompt senior leadership reviews, and create pressure on the very teams responsible for the student experience.

For professional services professionals, the NSS is a direct feedback mechanism on your work, even if your name never appears on it. How well students feel supported, informed, and heard is shaped as much by the teams behind the scenes as by the academics in front of them.

What forward-looking institutions are doing

The best-performing institutions don't treat the NSS as an annual event. They use the data year-round to identify gaps in student support, improve communication, and close the feedback loop,  showing students that their views lead to real change. Professional services staff who can point to NSS-informed improvements in their areas are increasingly valuable to institutions that take continuous improvement seriously.
