What results day really takes from admissions, recruitment, IT and comms teams
A-level results day has arrived, and Clearing has properly opened for the year. Students scrambling for places dominate the coverage. Less visible is the work it takes on the other end of the phone line - and the professional services staff who carry most of it.
Not just admissions
Clearing runs from early July to October, but results day is the peak. Manchester's helplines answered over 10,000 calls across results week last year, 6,000+ on the day itself. Northampton had 350+ academics and professional services staff on calls and applications since Clearing opened on 5 July, taking nearly 800 calls and completing almost 1,500 applications on the day alone.
Neither is admissions-only. Universities pull in recruitment, IT, comms, marketing, and academic staff acting as course selectors, often alongside their normal roles. Many institutions bring in extra temporary staff just to cover the volume.
Why the load falls where it does
Somewhere between 65,000 and 70,000 students find a place through Clearing each year, most confirmed by phone on results day itself. That concentration into a single morning is what makes the day so intense - a call answered quickly can be the difference between a student choosing your institution or moving down their list.
It's also the sharp end of longer preparation: admissions teams spend the weekend before finalising decisions, vacancy lists need to be current, and staff fielding calls outside their usual remit need scripts and FAQs ready to go.
The bigger picture
Days like this are a useful lens on the pressure professional services teams are already under. With institutions managing tighter margins and, in some cases, reduced headcount, the Clearing surge has to be absorbed by teams that are often smaller than a few years ago. Staff stepping outside their roles to answer phones isn't just cross-team goodwill - it's often a practical necessity when there's no spare capacity sitting idle for exactly this moment.
For students, Clearing day is one of the most stressful days of their year. For a lot of professional services staff, it's one of the busiest. Worth remembering next time the results-day headlines roll around.
